To walk in the woods, explore a tide pool, or observe a flower in bloom (and make T take a picture of it) refreshes my spirit. I dwell in a tapestry of epiphanies through living and immersing myself in the joy of art and trees and love, my sweet dog, and my ever changing museum-esque abode. To be able to bathe my soul in the gold light of self-realization and my personal reality illuminates my life. I live by thinking, “we only get so many days … spend them like dreams.” I have always been a “maker” and an artist. From as far back as I can remember; my greatest triumphs have been in the realm of invention and the arts. From my designing and building “forts” as a child to my discovery of perspective drawing and painting and then to my first hand-built pottery pieces, to one of my favorite mediums, jewelry making, I have understood the joy I found in creating.
I am a native of Georgia, albeit more traveled than many of my peers, having spent time in the Caribbean, the Icelandic countries, and many places in between. I find that I have been heavily influenced by the time that I spent living in and exploring Alaska, and that I was artistically influenced by the time that I spent traveling through Haiti. My extensive travels have been partly due to my adventurous nature, partly due to my business sense, and partly due to the fact that my mother is from Denmark.
I was the recipient of a competitive art scholarship to Darton College, where I majored in Art with a focus on printmaking and pottery. My bent towards the arts has led me down many different and interesting paths, from the founding of an aromatherapy soap company to the establishment of two restaurants.
My artistic drive always tends towards both the practical and sensual – be it in the creation of a sumptuous meal, the construction of a beautiful table, or the design of a new piece of jewelry. I truly enjoy what the natural world has to offer me before good souls find homes for those finished pieces.
Through my exploration of various art forms, I always return to jewelry design. It is my constant. Jewelry is about pleasure, emotion, and exuberance. Adornment of the body invites the designer to appreciate the mood and unique beauty of real people. Ornaments are most compelling when they are immensely personal. These little objects of adornment only achieve full life and beauty when the admirer or wearer imbues them with meaning, power, and mystique. I love the positive effect a special piece of jewelry has on the wearer.
Spontaneity and lightness of concept juxtaposed with important metals, glass, crystal, or stones give jewelry energy and surprise. Visual richness in my work comes from the collision of perfect and imperfect, laying texture on texture, volume versus negative space, shape juxtaposed against detail. This is why I am very influenced by the jewelry of times past – here the tension between symmetry and asymmetry takes common objects and turns them into abstract sculptures.
My creations – be they jewelry, or objects d’art, or furniture - are for someone who wants something a little different.
Something striking.
Something … sexy.
To make beautiful things has been my drive as long as I can remember. Thank you for taking the time to share that which I love.
