Terri Paulk – "Walk with Hymn"

Wood Burned Staffs & Canes

Terri enjoys going out into the woods and looking for that special branch that will make just the right cane or staff. She carries a small saw with her and sometimes spends 2 to 3 hours gathering wood for her creations. Terri uses many varieties of wood for her pieces including Dogwood, Cedar, Cherry, Gum, Hickory, Oak, Poplar, Sassafras, and Sourwood.  Terri then uses an old fashioned “Shaving Horse” that she has affectionately named “Trigger” to remove the bark from the wood. When the bark is removed, Terri leaves it to dry for a few weeks or if it is dry enough she begins sanding. Once the wood is prepared, Terri embarks on her favorite part of the process, which is the wood burning, also known as pyrography. She does all of the burning freehand. Terri burns bible verses or hymns onto her pieces and the hymns are musically correct. During the 3 to 5 hours that Terri spends burning a hymn onto a piece of wood, she sings the hymn over and over. After the burning process, Terri then applies 4 to 5 coats of an acrylic sealer on the staff or cane. She adds a leather or satin cord strap to the staffs. Terri has a wide variety of her favorite hymns and verses available. Custom requests are also welcome.
