Bill Welker, a self-taught woodturner, creates segmented turnings from his studio in nearby, North Carolina. Being retired, Bill no longer keeps track of the time, but works several hours each day, seven days a week, and refers to this work as a labor of love.
As a retired engineer and self-employed entrepreneur, Bill has taken his love of woodworking and his knowledge of close tolerance work to the lathe and to the art of segmented turning. His work has been widely distributed and his teachings appreciated by his fellow wood turners.
The creations are all put together one piece at a time, starting at the bottom. The segments are cut, sanded, and assembled into rings. Each ring is then turned to the proper diameter and added, one at a time. After the piece is completely assembled, it is turned to its' final shape and sanded on the outside. The inside is then turned to the final wall thickness and sanded and the entire project finished and polished, both inside and out.
