We thoroughly enjoyed having Joan's "Gallery Debut" here Saturday April 12th, 2008

Joan demonstrated in the gallery from 1PM to 5PM.

It was truly incredible to watch her bring a pair of her ballerinas to life before our very eyes.

Thank you to everyone that came to the Reception in Joan's honor that evening!

You all helped to make her big day very special.

Turning Leaf Wood Art- A Fine Art Gallery is very proud to have Joan's paintings here. If you weren't able to join us for her "Debut"; I would encourage you to come in as soon as possible. Her work is very awesome. We will continue to try to get more of her pieces on the web page, so please check back.

Sincerely, Sherry Darling Owner/Director

About the artist:

Joan Christopher-Quillen, a native Atlantan, is an award-winning pastel artist who paints in a representational style.  Her subject matter ranges from landscapes and figures to structures and still lifes. She studied art in college, first at Wesleyan College and then at Auburn University.  Soon after, however, she put art aside and focused on raising her children and managing a career in advertising and public relations.  Decades later, after retiring from the business world, Joan resurrected her earlier passion and began painting seriously in 2004.  Her work has been praised for its painterly style, vivid colors, and strong contrast between light and shadow.

“For me,” Joan says, “the pastel medium is the most exciting, the most vibrant because of the brilliant colors. Whether I’m painting scenes collected while wandering backstage at a ballet performance, touring the Georgia countryside,  or traveling in Provence, I find that pastels are most effective in capturing the bold, vivid colors and strong play of lights and darks that always draw my attention.”

Joan is a member of the Southeastern Pastel Society, Atlanta Artists Center, Kudzu Art Zone, and a Juried member of the Degas Pastel Society. Her work has been chosen for private collections, accepted in numerous regional and local juried exhibits, and received a number of awards.

These are just a few of the pieces in Joan's initial collection, first released 04-12-2008. Many of her pieces sold the first day. Many more will be added to the web page in the very near future.
