Woodturner Gary Gardner has been involved with wood since he was a small child. As a young lad growing up in a poor household in Brooklyn, N.Y., Gary learned at an early age to make toys and furnishings for himself and his three siblings. Milk crates became scooters; packing boxes made excellent tables and benches. Gary worked at a lumber camp where he found that his soul was fed by the beauty of the forest. Over the years he was always drawn to wood working, building, and restoring both homes and furniture. After retiring, Gary moved with his beloved Sherry to the Blue Ridge Mountains in Georgia. It was at this time Gary revisited the lathe, an art form that he had first experienced in junior high school.
It was in learning to remove trees from the forest which led Gary to strive to restore them to their great majestic beauty. In his turnings he uses great patience to take away only what is necessary to enable the wood to express its' inner beauty. Gary never forces his ideas of shape or form onto a piece of wood, but rather exercises serene control of self and tools to allow each piece to evolve into its' own unique art form.
Gary has studied under many masters including, Dick Sing, Alan Lacer, Nick Cook, Lane Philips, and many more. Now, Gary uses a great deal of his time teaching woodturning at his studio in Morganton, GA. as well as at the John C. Campbell Folk School in Brasstown, N.C. He is often requested to demonstrate for woodturning clubs around the nation and at various symposia.
